Until relatively recently, there was no custom of celebrating Christmas in Japan because there are not many Christian people in the country. Therefore, we do not have a habit of eating turkey and rarely see it in stores in Japan. However, recently at Christmas time, the cities are decorated with illuminations, and the custom of celebrating as a Christmas event has completely taken root. There is no custom of eating turkey at home, but celebrating with roast chicken or beef and a Japanese version of strawberry cake is standard. Apparently, a world famous fried chicken store pushed a campaign in Japan for Japanese to eat chicken at Christmas. Also, with the influence of one famous Japanese cake shop, eating strawberry cake at Christmas became a custom. At any rate, Christmas in Japan has been established as a big event.
