Strawberries are normally sold from winter to late spring in Japan. Most of the sales occur in the Christmas season because Japanese eat Christmas cake decorated with strawberries. Japanese strawberries are fairly sweet. They are cultivated in many varieties. Three variety strawberries called amao, tochiotome and benihoppe are popular, and also white strawberries have emerged recently. Each variety is slightly different in size and taste. However, all of them have a good aroma and just the right acidity and sweetness. You should try them if you are ever in Japan in the growing season.
