Daifuku-mochi
Zenzai
Round rice cakes with ice cream
I previously introduced rice cake dishes which are commonly eaten in Japan. In fact, rice cakes are also often eaten as sweets. The most typical rice cake sweet is mochi combined with anko (mashed sweetened red bean paste). These include daifuku-mochi, oshiruko (zenzai) and ankoro-mochi. Daifuku-mochi is a rounded rice cake filled with anko. Oshiruko (zenzai) is anko soup with rice cakes. Ankoro-mochi are rice cakes wrapped with anko or with anko poured over them. Round rice cakes with ice cream inside are also very popular. Mochi is also delicious served with chocolate syrup, peanut butter, or jam. Rice cakes can be preserved a long time, and are easy to prepare because they can be heated up in a few seconds in a microwave oven. If you find mochi in the market, please try one of these combinations.
