Mikan
Remove the peel from mikan by hand
Mikan after the peel is removed
Although mikan (mandarin oranges) are produced all year in plastic greenhouses in many areas of Japan, they are available during off-season only in more expensive stores. Most are circulated closer to winter when they can be bought easily in all grocery stores throughout Japan. Mikan look like small tangerines and the taste is milder. Nice mikan have a stronger sweet than sour taste. Mikan are eaten easily because even children can remove the peel from mikan by hand. Most Japanese peel even the inner membrane from the mikan sections. Mikan holds the first position of home-grown fruit consumed in Japan. The top three mikan-producing prefectures are Wakayama, Ehime and Shizuoka. You should try mikan if you are ever in Japan in the winter.
