Okonomiyaki (Japanese-style pancakes) is considered a common food, and it can be eaten as a meal or as a snack. Okonomiyaki is usually made with water-soluble flour, shredded cabbage, sliced pork, and eggs. Okonomiyaki is almost always served with a sauce similar to Worcestershire in taste, but which is stickier, and many people put mayonnaise on top of that sauce. There are special sauces for okonomiyaki that are sold, and many people use them. Each region has its own unique okonomiyaki style, with Kansai and Hiroshima styles being particularly famous. Kansai is the area that includes Osaka. Hiroshima is in the Chūgoku region, the western part of mainland Japan. In these two areas, many people eat okonomiyaki on a regular basis. Kansai and Hiroshima style okonomiyaki are made differently, so if you're interested, check out our recipes. Many people cook okonomiyaki at home, and there are also many okonomiyaki speciality restaurants and take-out shops. Okonomiyaki is also sold in frozen form, and can be eaten simply by defrosting and heating it up. If you ever have a chance to eat okonomiyaki, please give it a try because it is delicious. You may notice that the texture is different from general pancakes.
