Tempura, as described elsewhere, is a typical Japanese dish that has existed since the 17th century. Tempura is cooked by dipping seafood and vegetables in a batter based on flour, eggs and water and deep-frying them in oil. Shrimps are the star of tempura because shrimp tempura is very delicious, and many Japanese have a special feeling about it. Shrimp tempura can be eaten in many Japanese style and tempura restaurants, especially those that specialize almost exclusively in serving expensive Japanese tiger prawns (kurumaebi). Shrimp tempura is sold as a prepared food in department stores and supermarkets. When cooked at home, cheaper shrimp than Japanese tiger prawns are usually used. Shrimp tempura is often used as a topping for udon or soba noodles. If you are interested in shrimp tempura, we have a recipe for it on our website.
