Katsudon is among the big bowl rice dishes. The bowl dishes have their roots in the fact that the main dish is placed on top of the rice and can be quickly eaten together with it. Katsudon is a big bowl dish consisting of a tonkatsu (pork cutlet) and onion slices simmered in a slightly sweet dashi soy sauce for a few minutes and served with soft scrambled eggs. The eggs can be served either under the tonkatsu or surrounding it. Tonkatsu is pork cutlet dipped in flour and beaten egg, then coated with bread crumbs and deep-fried. Katsudon is quite hearty and a stamina dish. The combination of pork cutlet, soup stock, egg, and rice is indescribably delicious. Katsudon is available at many restaurants, including those specializing in tonkatsu. It is also sold in many supermarkets. If you are in Japan, why not try katsudon? I hear that katsudon is well received by non-Japanese as well.
