Katsu curry is curry and rice and rice topped with cut pork cutlet (tonkatsu), and is quite a hearty Japanese meal. Tonkatsu is pork chops coated with bread crumbs which are deep fried in oil. Japanese curry is creamier than Indian curry. Pork cutlet and curry and rice are two Japanese dishes that are served both at home and in restaurants. Katsu curry is probably eaten more often at restaurants than at home. Katsu curry is said to have originated in a restaurant in Tokyo in 1918 and have spread throughout Japan in the 1951s. It is well known that Kanazawa curry specialty restaurants in Kanazawa City and other parts of Ishikawa Prefecture (the northwestern part of the main island Honshu) always serve katsu curry. There is a chain of Kanazawa curry restaurants scattered all over Japan. In some cases, chicken cutlets are used instead of pork. Incidentally, it seems that katsu curry is popular in the UK, and, although I'm not sure, chicken may be used more often than pork. We have two recipes for pork and chicken katsu curry and rice that you can try if you are interested.
