Taiyaki is a Japanese popular sweet, and it seems to have existed since the beginning of the 20th century. The most usual filling is anko (mashed sweetened red bean paste), which is often used in Japanese sweets. Taiyaki is baked in a fish-shaped utensil into which anko and a batter of wheat, milk, eggs, sugar, etc. is poured. If you are interested in how to cook taiyaki, please see our recipe. But many Japanese almost always buy taiyaki at specialty shops rather than cook it at home. Taiyaki is usually sold for about 100 yen, or about 200 yen at high-end shops. Some shops also sell custard and chocolate cream instead of anko filling. If you are in Japan, please look for a taiyaki shop, where you can eat freshly baked taiyaki.
