Cream puff is not a Japanese sweet. However, as a standard western-style confectionery, it is very popular in Japan. Instead of the name "cream puff," which is not familiar to Japanese, it is called shukurimu in Japanese. "Shu" was chosen from chou à la crème, which means cream puff in French, and "kurimu" is the Japanese pronunciation of the word cream. Shukurimu is sold not only at cake shops but also at convenience stores and supermarkets. Shukurimu is mostly about the size of a palm and is about 5 cm (2 in) high. Shukurimu pastry is thin and light, and custard cream is generally used for the inside. Custard cream is made from a mixture of eggs, sugar and flour, and warm milk is added while mixing. There is also a shukurimu made of two layers of custard and whipped cream. If you are interested, please try shukurimu as it is easy to obtain anywhere in Japan.
