Beef stew and cream stew are the two main types of stews made in Japan. Both stews are always eaten as a main dish. Beef stew is cooked with beef and vegetables such as onions, carrots and potatoes in a demiglace-based soup. Cream stew, which originated in Japan, is also cooked with meat and vegetables such as onions, carrots and potatoes, but in a white creamy sauce made from flour, butter and milk. Stew sauce mixes for both types are sold by various food manufacturers, so many Japanese can make the stews at home. The stews can be cooked easily, simply by simmering the cut ingredients in water and adding the stew sauce mixes. Pre-packaged stews are also sold. They can easily be prepared by warming them in hot water or in a microwave. Both of our stew recipes are made from scratch, so if you are interested, please try them.
